Saving the World (2)

A couple of weeks ago, our sixth grade students decided that they wanted to do something nice. Not something nice for themselves, nor even for their favorite teachers. Instead, they decided that they wanted to help out a local girl whose family could not afford to send her to school. Our students made a commitment to raise money every year to help her get an education.

In order to raise money, we decided to hold a bake sale. Various families associated with the school volunteered to donate and some even had students come over to help do the baking. We had four helping us make some peanut butter blossoms.

They even offered to do the dishes when the cookies were all made.

After making all these cookies last night, we brought all of our collected cakes, cookies, bars, and cupcakes into the quad to sell. The plan was to take pictures of the sale in progress, but that proved to be impossible. When living at a boarding school, students tend to crave home-cooked food. This bake sale was no exception as high school students descended on our tables and bought out everything we had within 15 minutes.

In the end, we raised almost 10,000 rupees (this works out to a bit over $200)! And best of all, the dirty pans were sent home with their owners to be washed.

It will be great to see what our students come up with to raise even more money next year!
